Mekong Giant Catfish is a freshwater fish that is originally from Mekong River, Thailand and it is the largest freshwater fish in the world. This fish is the largest endemic fish species in Mekong and they migrate for long distances to breed. Now, this fish can be found only in the main river of the Mekong in Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Scientists estimate that the population of this fish has declined about 90% in the last decade. There is no definite population number, and the decline of this fish population is based on the number of specimens caught and some experts believe that maybe only a few hundred Mekong Giant Catfish are still alive.
The length of Mekong Giant Catfish can reach 10 feet or about 3 meters and it can weigh up to 295 kg. This fish is known among the international Anglers as a fish that is very difficult to conquer and can test the Anglers during the fight. To catch this fish, one of the effective bait used is bread and fine red rice that are mixed with essence.
To get this fish, you can use reel size 6000, PE 8 and leader 80 lbs. There are two fishing locations in Bangkok to catch this fish, namely Bungsamran and Shadow Lake, where in both locations these fish can be caught throughout the year with a catch-and-release system due to its condition that is almost extinct.
