Dolphinfish Fishing Tips from a Professional Anglers

Anglers who love sport fishing must know the Dolphinfish or usually called Mahi-Mahi fish. Its color and how it escapes from the bait make anglers always want to hunt for this fish. In Indonesia, every October to mid of January, tens of thousands of Dolphinfish come to the Lombok strait to search for the main food of sardines, squid, or shrimp. This fish movement is very agile, even it often flies through the open air to be set free from the hook. That’s why there’s a special technique used to catch this fish.

To catch this fish, you should use a 6-8cm squid, sardine, or a slice of tuna meat because Dolphinfish doesn’t like artificial bait or lure.

Throw a hook about 40-50 meters. Once the hook falls in the water, you must retrieve it quickly. If you strike, pull up the hook and don’t get loose. In addition, when fishing for this Dolphinfish, make the boats steered by slow trolling or moving forward slowly, then throw your hook from the back.

Use a casting rod with a size of 120 to 160 lbs, with a level of PE 2 or 3. You should also use the hook with size 11 or 12. Also, use reel spinning and adjust the drag lock with a little loose. This is done in order to maintain the flexibility of the tackle so the fish won’t escape from your hook.
